No matter what you are doing on this finest of Holidays, you will absolutely need a soundtrack to do it to. There are plenty of Halloween playlists in the world, but none so carefully curated as the one I’m about to present to you now. This is what I always play at my Halloween parties, and from what I can tell, it is the main reason why they are always such a success. Allow me to demonstrate the variety of tricks and treats available on this gathering of festive music for my favorite time of year.

Monster Mash

I’m going to get this one out of the way early because it’s a staple. It never gets old, and there really isn’t an excuse to play it any other time of the year, so you might as well enjoy the tune and dance with the groovie goolies.

Bad Rap Songs about Freddy Krueger and/or The Addams Family

Will Smith, MC Hammer, and the Fat Boys. These days when you are in the mood for hip hop, these are not the artists you turn to, but none of these current artists are bold enough to have the main horror movie villain open up their track with a rap. Freddy Krueger may not have a great flow, but gosh darn it he’s got heart.

Themes

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Goosebumps, The Blob, and Halloween (the Movie) have fantastic and iconic soundtracks that are must haves when you want to think back to the visuals and the chills you get when you watched these for the first time. Okay, most people have never heard the song from The Blob, but I had to include it because it it by far the best song recorded by the titular “Five Blobs”.

Metal Monsters!

Rob Zombie’s Dragula and Living Dead Girl are great year-round metal songs as well as the Nightmare Before Christmas’ This is Halloween by Marilyn Manson, and Fear by Disturbed. While these bring fear to all those asking us to turn down that racket, they make perfect additions to a rock filled Halloween Playlist.

Monster Mash

The playlist starts with Monster mash, so chances are nobody heard it while you are still getting ready or have’t picked anyone up in your car yet. That’s okay. Now everyone can enjoy because here it is again.

Halloween Oldies

The Purple People Eater, Jeepers Creepers, and I Put a Spell on you all remind us that enjoying monsters and Halloween is a timeless tradition. Also a reminder to enjoy this holiday while you still can before you can no longer enjoy the bitter sting of a super sugary treat.

Modern Scary Stuff

The Boogie Monster - Gnarles Barkley, Disturbia - Rhianna, Dracula’s Wedding - Outkast. This gives me hope for the future. While I could use more Halloween specific popular songs in my life, these songs make the cut for being spooky pop songs that make me say “That’ll do, pig.” And by pig I mean talented artists.

Classics With Creepy Connotations

Boris the Spider, Don’t Fear the Reaper, Superstition, and Highway to Hell. Wonderful year round songs again, but more fantastic with the backdrop of Halloween. As long as you are okay with the concept of Hell being used as something to scare kids. Similar to boogie men, vampires, and Frankensteins. Like, Dr Victor Frankenstein and his legacy of scientists taking on his work. Making zombies. Isn’t that all he was doing? Making zombies? I mean, don’t get me wrong (don’t you dare get me wrong) that is impressive, but isn’t that ultimately what it was? Making life out of dead things? I’m not sure how I got off on this rant, I just really like picturing him working in the lab.

Monster Mash

Yes, it’s on here three times. You just need to make sure everyone has a chance to hear it. Going a whole Halloween without hearing this song at least once is like going to the bathroom and not washing your hands afterwards. What’s the rush? Enjoy yourself for a while.

Get Dancing!

Ghostbusters, Thriller, and Jump in the Line. I could go on about all of these songs and how they take us back to different times when we first heard them, but Jump in the Line is an interesting one. I mean, It’s on like every Halloween Soundtrack out there because of Beetlejuice. It has nothing dark, creepy, or even has one minor key in it. That is impressive. Hey, whatever gets them on the dancefloor I guess.

I Want Candy

People often forget about how much candy is a part of Halloween when they are selecting their Halloween songs. Candy is integral and nothing glorifies the sugary goodness like this song. Even if it is delicious metaphorical candy.

Monster Mash

I’m not gonna lie. I can’t really justify putting Monser Mash on this playlist three times in a row around this time in the playlist. It just had to be done.

Creepy Sounding Songs

No More Hot Dogs, African Night Flight, Livin’ in the Sunlight, Lovin’ in the Moonlight, Toxic. These don’t are not actually about monsters or ghouls (Though No More Hot Dogs is about cutting someone’s head off) it shows that some songs can make the cut just by sounding creepy. This playlist gets a very diverse sound by having songs that sound creepy that are not about creepiness, and having fun sounding songs that have creepy content. Yay!

Cool Creepies

Creepy Doll, Wolf like me, She’s Dead, and Devil Town. These guys have the right idea. They weren’t thinking about Halloween when bringing these songs into the world. They keep the creepiness of Halloween in their hearts for regular songs, and I like that. I like that a lot.

Funny Spooky Scary

Werewolf Bar Mitzvah, Demon Woman, Monster, and Official Halloween Tribute Song. Gwyneth Hayden is a 30-something marketing executive with a top-notch career, killer wardrobe, dream apartment and great friends. She thinks the only thing missing is a man. In a moment of inspired desperation, she fills out a profile on the dating website ChristianMingle.com hoping to find Mr. Right. However, Gwyneth's attempts at impressing her dream guy end in disaster when he calls her out on her "faux faith." In an honest realization, she sees her superficial life for what it really is, and she's driven to create a personal relationship with God. I couldn’t think about what to write here, so I just copy/pasted the description of the Christian Mingle movie here in case anyone was interested and curious if someone ever made a movie based on a faith-based dating website.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I always get flack from someone about this song. Some misguided soul usually tries to convince me that this is a Christmas song, but seeing as how Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year, I think there’s no better fit for this song than on this fantastic list. I mean, there is a part of the song that specifically states “There'll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of [ something something I don’t remember] long, long ago.”

Monster Mash

I decided to put this song at the end of this playlist because I couldn't remember if I added it yet, and it seemed like a banger. A coffin banger.

Now you can go forth and celebrate Halloween with the 80 tracks of this holiday’s greatest playlist! I hope you have a great time, and even if you happened to celebrate it this past weekend like some sort of handsome genius, you still have one last day to get the Halloween spirit out before November stomps it out.

Enjoy:
