2021 Music Showcase, Part 1

We're officially one whole month into 2021, so it's time for everyone's best-of 2021 lists to start! Now that I've finally returned from Jupiter, I'm delighted to be back on Earth and filling my ears with Earth music. Without further ado, here's my list of the three albums/ep's that have grabbed my attention so far this year.

Lady Leshurr - ASTRONAUT EP

I know what you're saying. "Keith, you idiot. You moron. You absolute buffoon. Lady Leshurr's energetic and engaging ASTRONAUT EP came out in 2020! What on God's green earth are you doing starting off your list of 2021 music by showcasing an EP from last year?"

Ok, fine. You're right. But it came out on December 26th, far too late to be included on any best-of 2020 list, and it deserves your attention. This EP grabbed me by the nostalgia bone associated with Lady Sovereign and Dizzee Rascal, then pummeled it with superior lyricism and the kind of off-putting production that makes my ear-hair stand at attention.

Hospital Bracelet - South Loop Summer

Ok we're officially on to actual 2021 releases. You happy now!? Too bad, because you won't be after listening to this EP. Hospital Bracelet's South Loop Summer EP will bring you back to all the angst and heightened emotions of High-School and College, including break-ups, saying goodbye to friends after a short-but-intense summer, and living while chemically imbalanced.

I typically don't consider myself a fan of the Emo genre, but I was won over by their lyrics and the emotional honesty emanating from the vocals. And the riffs. These kids have got some sweet riffs. Also they are from Chicago! I really look forward to seeing them live once I'm not terrified to catch or give someone Covid!

Cheekface - Emphatically No.

Cheekface! Cheekface aren't pioneers, pushing the boundaries of music into new and exciting spaces never heard before. When I first heard this album, I thought it was Pavement. I like Pavement, but I'd be lying if I told you I listened to them recently. Like, within the last year. Or maybe a few years...

But Cheekface ISN'T Pavement! They apply the same extremely witty lyrics and near-monotone vocals to life as a depressed Millenial trying to make the best of things here in the third decade of the 21st century. Which means it's basically tailored for me specifically. Maybe you'll Like it, too!
